Product Description
Gitane-Campagnolo was a French professional cycling team that was active from 1975 to 1977. The team was founded by the French bicycle manufacturer and cigarette brand Gitane* and had Italian component manufacturer Campagnolo as its main sponsor.
The French brand Gitane is one of those names that was a fixed value in the cycling peloton in the 2nd half of the last century. Cycling greats such as Jean Stablinski, Rudi Altig, Jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault, Lucien van Impe, Laurent Fignon and Greg Lemond were active in it. Gitane won the Tour de France no less than 11 times.
In 1975 and 1976, the Gitane-Campagnolo cycling jersey was ridden by Bernard Hinault, Gerben Karstens, Willy Teirlinck and of course Lucien Van Impe (mountains classification Tour de France 1975 and final classification Tour de France 1976).
* Gitane is both a cigarette brand and a bicycle brand. The Gitane brand was originally founded in France in 1925 as a bicycle manufacturer. Later, in the 1960s, the brand also started producing cigarettes. So, depending on the context, Gitane can refer to a cigarette brand or a bicycle brand.
